In terms of content most websites are static in nature. Content is created and posted live and then more often than not, left for long periods without change. Most websites are simply business cards that list details of a service or product and means by which to obtain/contact them. This is ok for sites that are not aggressive with their Search Engine Optimisation, but the reality is every business would love to be number one for their chosen key word/s. But if you leave your site static odds are you won't be.

Content that is updated or added to on a regular basis increases the frequency and likelihood of Google indexing your site. So if a site remains static and without being regularly updated one can only draw the conclusion that Google will crawl your site less and leave your website susceptible to competitors who are updating content regularly. So how often should I update my websites content? Generally speaking it is recommended to update/add content or pages at least one a month. Once again the reality of it is that people behind their websites will not do so because of many reasons a few being (a) they do not have a content management system and are unable to manipulate code and as a result their website. (b) they do not have time or (c) they don't see the need.

A blog solves a lot of the issues surrounding static content. Most have content management systems integrated into their interfaces making it very easy to add/edit content. Blogger and Wordpress are prime examples of this. A blog allows the user to diverge into genre's that he or she may not have thought relevant for their original website and thus set the user free to explore all areas of his/her industry. A blog is a great way to increase traffic on key words that were previously thought impossible to rank on. A blog is a great way to inject life into your website, it can effectively become the living breathing organism of a previously 'dorment' online hub.
